‘Hey children, it’s time for dinner! ’ Amazon rolls out Alexa Announcements for Echo

Amazon Echo and the Echo Plus both support Alexa Announcements.

(GeekWire Photo / Todd Bishop) That Amazon Echo apparatus in your home is going to have a whole lot more vocal — using your voice. Amazon today is rolling out a brand new feature named Alexa Announcements which allows one-way statements to be made to every Echo apparatus in a home. By simply saying to one Echo apparatus, “Alexa, declare” followed with a brief term like “it’s time for dinner” or “honey, I’m home! ,” every compatible Echo apparatus linked to the same household account will talk that phrase in your voice (maybe not Alexa’s voice). Amazon states the commands “Alexa, inform everybody” and “Alexa, broadcast” will also work the same. It is purely one-way communication, much like an old-style intercom broadcast announcement. An Amazon spokesperson claims that the new attribute will automatically work round the Echo family of devices  after the rollout that starts today from the U.S. and Canada is complete. That includes the original Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and Echo Spot. But it will not support, currently, the transportable Amazon Tap.   No setup is needed in the Amazon Alexa app. Amazon says millions of its clients already have more than one Echo apparatus in the home. The new Alexa Announcements attribute is in addition to other Echo multi-device features such as Alexa Calling & Messaging, Multi-Room Music, and Drop In (which affirms a device-to-device intercom). “Alexa, announce that it’s time for your cat to come to dinner.”
