RELATED: Second Amazon Go shop opens in Seattle with additional growth at the horizon The second place at the base of the Madison Centre office tower, in the center of Seattle’s central business district, opened Monday, roughly seven months after the debut of the initial Amazon Go shop. When GeekWire visited the shop in the morning, we weren’t greeted by the long lines and fanfare which arrived with the original shop’s debut. Though the technologies behind the idea and the menu in the shop are always changing and evolving, there is no major changes between shops one and two, Dilip Kumar, vice president of technologies to Amazon Go along with Amazon Books, said in a interview using GeekWire at the shop. The second time around, Amazon did not need a year of beta testing to find everything working just right. “The first shop, we opened it for about a year, and also the motive had to do with the technology and much more related to the fact that we thought that we would need to start it out into the public, but the need in the Amazon population itself was considerable enough for us to be able to learn whatever we had to,” Kumar said. “The second shop, we could only piggyback off of these learnings in addition to the things that we are doing here now.” Kumar wouldn’t spill the beans future growth plans . The second shop does not have a kitchen location like the original. Instead, Amazon employees prepare meals in an off-the-shelf toilet, which makes sense if the company would like to keep on expanding Amazon Go in its own hometown. Store number two is slightly more compact than the initial place — 1,450 square feet versus 1,800 square feet — using a comfortable design and layout. The new place does not possess alcohol and it went light on grocery essentials in favor of storing things such as cakes and sandwiches, meal snacks and kits in the forefront. Catch and go remains a significant portion of Amazon Go. People stocked shelves, functioned security and hung around outside the shop to explain the idea and get folks to enter.  Despite the well publicized roster from Amazon Go, many clients still had to be told how it works. A couple were amazed to find out that after picking up things they could just walk outside and the sequence could be charged automatically. Meal kits figure greatly to Amazon Go. (GeekWire Photo / Nat Levy) The shop is based heavily on the Amazon Proceed smartphone program. Clients scan a exceptional QR code inside the program before passing via a set of glass doors, like the gates Amazon workers go through when entering their office buildings each morning. A huge collection of overhead cameras and weight detectors in the shelves automatically track what people pick up and take from the shop. When clients leave, they just walk outside. Amazon Go’s systems automatically debit their accounts for the things they take, sending the reception into the program.  By logging shoppers in at the entrance, then monitoring their actions from the shop, the system removes the need for traditional checkout registers and checkout employees along with them.
